HOW DID JEWS REACT TO ROMAN RULE?
Most Jews did not like the Roman Rule. Instead of having another Jewish king like they usually would, A Roman governor called a Procurator rules the new province. The Jews were soon arguing among themselves about what to do. Some favored working with the Romans, while others didn't. Others turned their backs on the Romans. They began settling in isolated areas and shared their belongings with each other.
WERE JEWISH REBELS SUCCESSFUL?
Some Jews even believed that they should fight the Romans and take back control over their kingdom. These people were soon to be called Zealots. They convinced many Jews to take up arms and fight the Romans in 66 AD. The rebellion was brutally crushed. The Romans basically destroyed the temple and killed thousands of Jews. The Jewish general names Joshephus, fought in the war but later took the Romans side. He then wrote about the horrors of Jerusalem's fall in his work. "History of the Jewish War. " Once again the Jews tried to overthrow the Romans, but again failed. This time they were forced to leave their homes and never come back. They were banned for life.
WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE LIFE OF JESUS?
During the Roman Times, many of the Jews had expected the Messiah to come. This Messiah would help them win back their freedom. The Israelite prophets had already predicted that the Messiah would come a long time ago. Just a few decades before the first Jewish revolt against Rome, A Jew who went by the name of Jesus left his home in the city of Nazareth and began preaching. From 30-33, Jesus traveled through all of Judea and Galilee, the region north of Judea preaching his ideas/message. crowds of people gathered to hear him preach. He soon got together 12 disciples who followed him wherever he went.
WHAT DID JESUS TEACH?
According to the Christian bible, Jesus preached that Good was soon to come to rule the world. he told people to turn away from their sin, and that them following the Jewish religious laws was not as important as having a intimate relationship with God. Jesus referred to God as his father. The main part of Jesus' message was to give a group of sayings known as the "Sermon on the Mountain." In them, Jesus made it very clear that a person had to love and forgive from the heart and not just go through the motions and traditions of religious laws. Along Jesus' sayings was " Blessed are the merciful for they will obtain mercy. " and "Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the children of God. " Jesus then told His listeners to love and forgive each other, just as God loves and forgives all people. Jesus says that Gods commands are simple. he said " Love the Lord God with all your heart, all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. " To present his message, jesus used parables.
What was the Crucifixion?
Jesus and his message drew strong responses from people. His followers called attention to instances in which they believed he healed the sick and performed other miracles. They said he the long awaited messiah. Other jews disagreed and said he was a deceiver. Above all, Judea's Roman rulers feared the effects of Jesus' preaching. About 33AD, Jesus went to Jerusalem to celebrate the passover, an important Jewish holiday.
Who were Peter & Paul?
Apostles, or early christian leaders who helped set up churches and spread the message of jesus, played an important role in the growth of Christianity. Perhaps the two most important were Peter and Paul. Simon Peter was jewish fisher. He had known Jesus while he was alive and had been one of the original 12 people Jesus had called to preach his message.
What do Christians believed?
From the beginning, Christians taught that Jesus was the son of God and had come to save people. By accepting Jesus and his teachings, people could gain salvation, or saved from sin and allowed to enter heaven. Like Jesus, after death they would be resurrected and join God in everlasting life. Because of their faith in Jesus, Christians began to understand God in a new way. Like the jews, Christians believed in the God of Israel and studied the Hebrew bible. However, most Christians came to beloved that one God existed in 3 persons: Father, Sons, and Holy Spirits. This idea became known as the trinity, which comes from a word meaning "Three".
